Germanischer Lloyd AG (GL)

Germanischer Lloyd is contributing its know-how to the Zemships project at several different points: the ships hull will be surveyed and certified. The ship will receive a GL certificate of approval documenting that the design complies with the relevant regulations. The „innards” of the ship will also be scrutinized: the fuel cell system including the hydrogen plant and the propulsion system. GL will carry out a comprehensive safety analysis which will give information about how to prevent malfunctions and to maintain reliable and safe operations.

Germanischer Lloyd, founded in 1867, is an independent, internationally active company for ship classification as well as safety and quality control. It provides a comprehensive range of expert technical knowledge all over the world in many sectors of industry, including surveying and safety certification for ships, offshore drilling rigs, wind farms and other industrial plants as well as certification of quality assurance systems. Germanischer Lloyd has been involved in the approval procedure for fuel cell systems for more than ten years, including some which operate under the particularly stringent conditions of use in submarines. In December 2002, Germanischer Lloyd was the first ship classification society worldwide to issue guidelines for the operation of fuel cell systems on ships.
